Bulb-Socket Vehicles: Why One LED Function Can Stay Dark, and the Adapter That Fixes It

A rare case that only applies to vehicles whose factory lamps use halogen bulbs in separate sockets, like the 2016-2023 Tacoma. Why one LED function can stay dark there, and how the polarity adapter included with those kits fixes it in a minute.

This one only applies to a specific kind of vehicle: one whose factory lamps run on halogen bulbs, with each function (reverse, turn, brake, running light) plugged in through its own bulb socket instead of one main plug. The 2016-2023 Toyota Tacoma is an example. Even on these vehicles most installs never run into it. But if a single function stays dark while everything else works, here's why, and the one-minute fix.

On vehicles with separate halogen bulb sockets, the polarity at each socket was never standardized. LEDs only light up one way. Kits for these vehicles include a polarity adapter: if one function stays dark, plug it in and you're done.

Why the factory bulb never cared

A halogen bulb is a glowing filament. Current can run through it in either direction and it lights exactly the same. On a vehicle designed around halogen bulbs, nothing depends on which of the two wires at a bulb socket is positive, so nothing forces that to be consistent.

When the factory lamp connects through one main plug, that doesn't matter: the plug has a fixed pin layout, and a replacement lamp built to match it is wired right every time. When each function has its own bulb socket, there is no fixed layout to match.

Why an LED does care

An LED is a diode: current flows through it in one direction only. Connected the right way round, it lights. Connected the other way round, it stays dark. Reversed polarity doesn't harm a RIGNOX lamp; it just won't light until the connection is the right way round.

The fix is in the box

Kits for these vehicles include a short polarity adapter: a 2-pin plug on each end that swaps positive and negative in between.

  • It goes on a separate 2-pin plug only. Each of those carries a single function, so the adapter changes polarity and nothing else.
  • The main connector never needs it. It's keyed to the factory pin layout and fits one way only.

Step by step

  1. Install the lamp and test every function as shown in your installation guide.
  2. If one function is dark, unplug that function's 2-pin plug.
  3. Plug the polarity adapter into the vehicle side, then plug the lamp into the adapter. Push each end until the latch clicks.
  4. Test again. Lit? Zip-tie the adapter to the harness, away from heat and moving parts.

Adapter in and still dark? Then it isn't polarity. Take the adapter out and go through LED Headlight or Tail Light Not Working? Check These Before Anything Else.

Don't cut or swap wires to fix polarity. The adapter does the same job without touching the factory wiring.
