You installed a new set of headlights, it rained overnight, and this morning there is a light fog on the inside of the lens. Your first thought is that the lamp is leaking. In most cases it isn't, and the reason is something almost nobody explains before you buy: every modern headlight and tail light is vented on purpose, and a vented lamp will fog under the right weather no matter who made it.
A lamp that breathes will sometimes fog. A lamp that leaks will hold water. Fog clears through the vents on its own; water does not. That difference is the whole diagnosis.
Why there is moisture in a brand-new headlight
A headlight is a sealed plastic box with a light source inside. When the light is on, the air inside heats and expands; when it goes off on a cold night, the air contracts. A truly airtight housing would flex, stress its seams, and eventually crack or pop a seal. So every manufacturer builds in one or more breather vents on the back of the housing: small openings covered by a membrane that lets air through and keeps liquid water and dust out.
That vent is the reason fog appears. Air moves in and out with every warm-up and cool-down cycle. When humid air is inside the housing and the lens gets colder than the air (a cold night, a car wash, a rainstorm after a warm day), water vapor condenses on the inner surface of the lens as a fine mist, exactly as it does on a bathroom mirror. Nothing leaked. The moisture came in as vapor, through the vent, the way it is designed to.
The same physics runs in reverse. When the lens warms up again, the mist evaporates and the vapor leaves through the same vent. The vent does not stop condensation from forming; its job is to give the moisture somewhere to go.
Does this happen to factory lights too?
Yes, and the manufacturers say so in writing. Ford's owner's manuals carry a section titled "Lamp Assembly Condensation" that reads, in part: exterior lamps are vented to accommodate normal changes in pressure, condensation can be a natural by-product of this design, and a thin mist can form on the interior of the lens and eventually clears through the vents, with clearing time taking as long as 48 hours in dry conditions. That language appears in F-150, Super Duty, Focus and Mach-E manuals.
A 2018 manufacturer technical service bulletin filed with NHTSA goes further and gives dealers a decision rule: turn the headlamps on, watch for 10 to 20 minutes, and do not replace the assembly unless there is water puddled in the bottom of the lamp to a depth of 10 mm or more. The bulletin also notes something that matters for LED owners specifically: LED-only headlamps, when turned on, do not generate enough heat to dissipate normal condensation the way a halogen bulb does.
So the answer to "is this normal" is not a RIGNOX opinion. It is the position every major automaker takes on their own lamps, and the same rule applies to any aftermarket assembly built with a vented housing, which is all of them that are built correctly.
Why LED lights can take longer to clear than halogen
A halogen bulb runs at several hundred degrees and turns the housing into a small oven; ten minutes of driving bakes the mist off. An LED assembly runs far cooler by design. That is why the LEDs last 50,000 hours instead of 1,000, but it also means the lamp relies on airflow and ambient temperature, not bulb heat, to dry out. A fine mist on an LED lamp can take a day or two to clear in damp weather. That is not a defect; it is the trade-off for a light source that doesn't cook itself.
RIGNOX headlights address this in two ways: an active aluminum base that moves heat from the LED board into the housing, and breather vents with a waterproof membrane sized for the housing volume. The vents are what let fog leave; the heat path is what speeds it up.
Normal fog or a real leak: how to tell in two minutes
Use the same criteria the automakers give their own dealers. Look at the lens in daylight and answer three questions.
1. What does the moisture look like?
- Normal: a thin, even mist or haze. No drips, no streaks, no individual droplets you could point at.
- Not normal: large droplets, drip marks running down the inside of the lens, streaks, or water sitting in the bottom of the housing.
2. How much of the lens is affected?
- Normal: the mist covers less than half the lens, usually concentrated at the lowest or coolest part.
- Not normal: the whole lens is fogged and stays that way.
3. Does it clear?
- Normal: it thins out and disappears within 48 hours of dry weather, faster with the lights on and the vehicle moving.
- Not normal: it comes back every morning regardless of weather, or water is visibly pooled and never leaves.
The dealer rule, applied to any lamp. Fine mist, less than half the lens, gone within two days of dry weather: normal, do nothing. Droplets, streaks, or standing water that doesn't leave: a seal has failed, and the lamp needs to be replaced, not dried.
What to do when it's normal fog
Nothing dramatic. Drive with the lights on. Park where the front of the vehicle gets morning sun if you can. Give it 48 hours of dry weather. Do not drill the lens, do not pull the lamp and bake it, and do not stuff silica packs into the housing; all three are forum folk remedies that either damage the lamp or hide a leak until it does real damage.
Two things do help and are worth checking after any install:
- The rear caps and bulb-access covers are seated. On assemblies with removable rear covers, a cover left a quarter-turn loose is the most common cause of fog that keeps coming back. It is not a leak in the lamp; it is an opening you created.
- The vents are not blocked. Mud, an undercoating overspray, or a wiring loom pressed against the vent membrane will trap moisture inside. The vent has to breathe to do its job.
What to do when it's a leak
If you see droplets, streaks or standing water, the housing seal or lens seam has failed. On a RIGNOX assembly that is a defect in materials or workmanship and it is what the 2-year limited warranty exists for. Do not attempt to reseal the lamp yourself first; an opened housing is much harder for us to assess, and you don't need to.
Every RIGNOX support case starts with photos and video, because a lamp cannot be diagnosed from a description. Send us:
- A photo of the full lens in daylight, taken straight on, showing the water. This tells us whether it is mist, droplets or a pool.
- A close-up of the wettest area, so we can see drip lines or a puddle depth.
- A short video (10–20 seconds) with the lamp on, slowly panning across the lens. Moving water and light behave differently on video than in a still, and it shows us whether the moisture is on the inside surface.
- A photo of the back of the housing after install, showing the rear caps and the vent area, so we can rule out a loose cover or a blocked vent before shipping a replacement.
- Your order number and roughly how long after install the water appeared.
With those five things we can usually tell you the same day whether it is a warranty replacement or a seating issue you can fix in two minutes. Without them we have to ask for them, and that is a day lost.
One caution: water that appeared immediately after a pressure wash aimed directly at the back of the lamp is not a seal failure. Pressure washers exceed what any vented housing is designed to resist. Let it dry, and avoid spraying the vents directly.
The short version
- Every headlight and tail light is vented so the housing can breathe. Vapor enters through the vent, condenses on a cold lens, and leaves the same way. This is by design.
- Ford, and every other automaker, calls a thin mist normal and only replaces a lamp for droplets, streaks or standing water. Apply the same rule to any lamp.
- LED lamps run cooler than halogen, so fog can take up to 48 hours of dry weather to clear. That is a trade-off for a 50,000-hour light source, not a fault.
- Fog that keeps returning usually means a rear cover isn't seated or a vent is blocked. Check both before assuming a leak.
- Droplets or pooled water mean a failed seal. On a RIGNOX lamp, that is a warranty claim: send the lens photos, a video with the lamp on, a photo of the housing back, and your order number.
