A projector headlight is only as good as its aim. The cutoff on a projector is razor-sharp, which is exactly what makes it glare-free when it is pointed right and blinding when it is an inch too high. Every aftermarket headlight leaves the factory with a nominal setting that assumes a level vehicle at a certain ride height; your truck, with its tires, its lift, and its load, is not that vehicle. Aiming takes twenty minutes, a wall, and a roll of tape, and it is the single most common thing skipped after an install.
Aim the low beam only, on level ground, 25 feet from a wall, with the top of the cutoff 2 to 3 inches below the height of the projector. Do it before the final tightening if the adjusters are hard to reach, and do it again after any change to tires, suspension or load.
Where the adjusters are on a RIGNOX headlight
RIGNOX headlights are complete assemblies with their own adjusters, built into the back of the housing, in the same general location as the factory lamp's. On most models there is a single vertical adjuster, an 8 mm hex bolt head (or a slotted screw on some housings) on the upper rear of the housing; turn it with an 8 mm socket on an extension. Some models also have a horizontal adjuster nearby, which shifts the beam left or right. Your vehicle's installation guide shows the exact position for your model.
One thing to know before you mount the lamp: on several trucks the rear of the housing is nearly inaccessible once the headlight is bolted in and the bumper or grille is back on. If your installation guide says access is tight, set the aim roughly with the lamp loosely mounted, then tighten, then fine-tune. Removing a headlight three times to chase an adjuster is the second most common complaint we hear after "I didn't aim it at all."
The 25-foot wall method, step by step
1. Set the vehicle up the way you actually drive it
- Level ground. A sloped driveway will put your aim off by inches.
- Tires at normal pressure, the usual load in the bed or cabin, half a tank of fuel. If you tow regularly, aim with the tongue weight on.
- Hood latched, no snow or mud weighing down the front.
- A flat, light-colored wall or garage door. Do this at dusk or in a dark garage; you need to see the cutoff clearly.
2. Mark the reference lines
- Pull up close to the wall, about 3 feet, with low beams on. On the wall, mark the vertical centerline of each beam's hot spot with a strip of tape, and the height of the projector center (measure from the ground to the center of the projector lens, transfer that height to the wall with a horizontal strip).
- Now back the vehicle straight up until the headlight lenses are 25 feet from the wall. Measure it; don't estimate. Keep the vehicle square to the wall.
3. Aim the low beam
- Cover one headlight with a towel or a piece of cardboard so you are adjusting one beam at a time.
- Find the flat top edge of the cutoff on the wall. On a projector it is a crisp horizontal line with a step up on the passenger side; the step is correct, it lights the road shoulder and signs without lighting oncoming windshields.
- Turn the vertical adjuster in quarter-turn increments until the flat part of the cutoff sits 2 to 3 inches below your projector-height tape line. Clockwise usually lowers the beam; confirm the direction on the first quarter-turn before continuing. Taller trucks and lifted vehicles: go toward the bottom of that range, or slightly more, because your lamps sit higher than the drivers you'll meet.
- If the lamp has a horizontal adjuster, bring the hot spot's vertical center to the tape line you marked for that side. Without one, horizontal aim is set by the mounting and needs no adjustment.
- Uncover the other side, cover the one you just did, and repeat. When both are done, uncover both and check that the two cutoffs are level with each other.
4. Check high beam, then drive it
On a projector headlight, high beam is low beam plus more (the low-beam projector stays lit; a shutter opens or the high-beam projectors add), so it follows the low-beam aim and rarely needs a separate adjustment. Where a housing has a dedicated high-beam adjuster, set it so the high-beam hot spots sit at, or just below, the projector-height line. Then take the vehicle out on a dark road: if oncoming cars flash you, you are still high. If you can't see the road beyond a hundred feet on low beam, you are too low.
The aiming rule. Low beam, level ground, 25 feet, cutoff 2 to 3 inches below the projector center, quarter-turns, one side at a time. If the truck is lifted, aim lower, not higher.
Things that look wrong but aren't
- A stepped cutoff. The passenger side of the beam rising a few degrees is the design. It is how the lamp lights signs and the shoulder without glaring oncoming traffic.
- Two hot spots or a slightly uneven pattern on a multi-projector lamp. Each projector contributes its own patch; on a wall at 25 feet the patches overlap imperfectly. On the road they blend. Aim to the highest flat edge of the cutoff, not to an individual patch.
- The beam looks lower than the factory lamp did. Correctly aimed projectors throw more light on the road and less into the air than a factory reflector did. Judge it on the road, not on the wall.
Things that are actually wrong
- The cutoff is a fuzzy band, not a line. The lens is fogged, the shutter didn't seat, or you are looking at high beam. Confirm low beam and check the lens.
- The cutoff tilts across the wall. The housing isn't seated square in its mounts. Loosen, reseat, retighten before adjusting.
- The adjuster spins without changing anything. Stop. Contact us before forcing it; send a short video of the adjuster being turned and the wall, plus your order number.
When to re-aim
Any time the front ride height changes: a lift or leveling kit, new tires of a different diameter, a heavy bumper or winch, a new suspension. Also after any front-end impact, and once a year as a habit. Aim is not a one-time install step; it is a maintenance item that most owners never touch.
The short version
- Adjusters are on the back of the RIGNOX housing, 8 mm hex, in the factory location; the install guide shows where. Aim roughly before final mounting if access is tight.
- Level ground, normal load, 25 feet from a wall, low beam only, one side at a time.
- Cutoff 2 to 3 inches below projector height; lifted trucks aim lower.
- The stepped cutoff and imperfect overlap on a wall are normal. A fuzzy or tilted cutoff is not.
- Re-aim after any change to tires, suspension, or front-end weight.
