Murdered Out. Still Street Legal. The Smoked Tail Light Guide for Blacked-Out Builds

Smoked lenses finish a murdered-out build. RIGNOX smoked tail lights are up to 6× brighter than halogen behind the tint and DOT and SAE compliant.

Black paint, black wheels, black grille, black badges. Then you walk around back and there's a pair of bright red factory tail lights breaking the whole look. Every murdered-out build hits this point.

Smoked tail lights finish the job. The next step is choosing a complete assembly that delivers the look and visible road signals together.

The look

Murdered-out is the most popular combination in the build scene, and the tail lights are where it either comes together or falls apart.

  • Smoked lenses black out the rear. With the lights off, the tail lights sink into the body instead of standing out from it.
  • Blacked-out internals. The housing behind the lens is dark too, so there's no chrome glinting through.
  • Red through smoke when it counts. Hit the brakes and the light bars punch through the tint.

Why a complete smoked assembly makes the difference

The problem with most smoked tail lights is rarely the look. It's the light. Tint film and spray tint go over a lamp that was designed for a clear lens, so everything behind them gets dimmer: brake, turn and reverse alike. The film covers the lens, the bulbs behind it were never meant to push through it, and the result can be a brake light the driver behind you barely notices. That's the version that fails inspection.

Why a RIGNOX smoked assembly is different

RIGNOX smoked tail lights are designed as smoked from the start. Nothing covers the lens; the tint is part of a complete DOT/SAE-marked assembly, and the brighter, clearer brake and reverse lights behind it stand out, so the red and white output stays clearly visible through the lens. Every design is tested as a complete assembly in an SAE-recognized photometric lab against FMVSS 108.

Every state's rule comes down to red, visible and uncovered, and a complete RIGNOX smoked assembly is built to meet all three. We walk through what each state requires in Are smoked tail lights legal?

See which RIGNOX smoked tail lights fit your vehicle.

Which builds it suits

  • Trucks: Smoked lens with red light bars, aggressive without losing the classic red.
  • Off-road: Smoked with red or white bars ties in with black bumpers, racks and wheels.
  • Street cars: Smoked with red is the classic blacked-out muscle look.
  • Any dark paint: black, charcoal and dark gray are where smoked looks most deliberate. On light paint, Clear is often the better match.

Everything else stays full-function

Blacked out doesn't mean stripped down. Tail, brake, turn and reverse are all LED, the amber turn signals sweep outward in sequence on most builds, and the high-output reverse light is bright enough to actually use at night. Same IP67 sealing and anti-UV lens as our clear versions.

What this means for you

  • The murdered-out rear end, with no bright red factory lenses breaking the look
  • Brake, turn and reverse that stay bright through the tint
  • A DOT/SAE-marked assembly, not film or spray
  • Full LED, sequential signals and factory fit

Dark when off. Bright when on. Murdered out, still street legal.
