Important: This online guide is a product-image-verified overview for the matched RIGNOX product. It uses the product page, product reference images, and visible lighting-function details to guide product-side checks. Confirm hidden vehicle-side fasteners, trim clips, and wiring access points on your exact vehicle before removal.

Safety warning: Do NOT use dielectric grease or weather-sealing grease on connectors or sockets. Grease can cause connection problems and may affect warranty coverage.

Matched product

  • Product: 2012-2019 Volkswagen Beetle A5/PQ35 Projector Headlights (without bulb)
  • Product type: headlights
  • SKU: H-BTL13
  • Fitment: Fits: 2012-2019 Volkswagen Beetle (A5) with factory halogen headlights. Bulbs are not included — you supply your own H7 halogen bulbs for low and high beam. Product image checkpoints

  • The matching product page identifies this as a direct-fit, plug-and-play style installation. Use the product images for lamp-shape comparison and confirm the connector locks before reinstalling trim.
  • The visible product-function references indicate projector beam output, low beam, high beam, DRL checks for this product. Confirm beam pattern and function behavior before final bumper or grille reassembly.
  • If the kit includes a decoder, resistor, control module, or relay, secure it away from heat, moving parts, water paths, and sharp metal edges. Do not add universal electrical parts unless support confirms they are needed.
  • This headlight ships without bulbs. Fit your own H7 halogen bulbs, or the HID or LED bulbs you bought, before function testing.

Product notes

  • Use the product reference images on this page as the product-side visual check for connector layout, rear housing shape, and lighting functions.
  • Original vehicle trim, clip style, and fastener locations can vary by year, trim, and previous repairs. Remove panels slowly and verify each fastener before pulling.
  • Road-lighting compliance and off-road/show-use notes are product specific. Review the matching RIGNOX product page for the exact language for this item.

Before you begin

  • Confirm the exact product: Compare the RIGNOX headlights to the product reference images, including rear housing, plug layout, lens style, and included modules.
  • Work powered down: Park on level ground, switch the vehicle off, and disconnect the negative battery terminal when handling wiring.
  • Protect body panels: Use clean towels or masking tape near painted edges around the hood, grille, bumper edge, or fender liner area.
  • Do not force clips: If a lamp or trim panel does not move, stop and look for another fastener or locating pin.
  • No grease on connectors: Do not apply dielectric grease or weather-sealing grease to connectors or sockets.

Tools and supplies

  • Trim removal tool or panel clip tool
  • Metric socket and ratchet set; verify exact sizes on the vehicle before removal
  • Phillips and flat screwdrivers
  • Clean microfiber towels and masking tape
  • Electrical tape and zip ties for securing included harnesses only
  • A wall or flat vertical surface for beam-pattern checking

Remove the original headlights

  1. Locate the headlight locking mechanism: Open the hood and locate the locking mechanism near the inner side of the headlight housing. Identify the directional markings labeled "Open" and "Close."

Install the RIGNOX headlights

  1. Install your bulbs: Fit your H7 halogen bulbs, or the HID or LED bulbs you bought, in the low and high beam positions of the new RIGNOX headlight. If you are fitting an HID kit, mount its ballasts securely, away from heat and moving parts. There is no turn signal in this headlight: the Beetle's front turn signals are in the bumper and stay as they are.

  2. Connect the new headlight: Depending on the purchased product version, the rear housing and connector layout may vary slightly, but the main connection is direct plug-and-play. Connect the factory wiring harness to the corresponding connector on the new headlight and confirm that the locking tab clicks securely into place.

  3. Install and lock the new headlight: Align the headlight with the guide rails and slide it into the mounting opening. Make sure the condensation hose behind the headlight does not obstruct the installation path, then rotate the locking nut in the "Close" direction until the headlight sits flush with the body.

  4. Test all lighting functions: Turn on the ignition and test the daytime running lights, low beams, and high beams. Confirm that every lighting function operates correctly before driving the vehicle.

Electrical and function test

  1. Confirm low beam and high beam operate on both sides.
  2. Confirm the white DRL works on both sides.
  3. Confirm the startup animation only after normal road-light functions pass.
  4. Check for dashboard warnings, flicker, or intermittent operation before reinstalling final trim.
  5. Verify beam aim after installation so the cutoff is safe and even.

Final check

  • All connectors are locked, dry, and routed without tension.
  • Included modules or extra harnesses are secured away from heat, water paths, moving parts, and sharp edges.
  • Both headlights sit flush with even body gaps and properly seated seals.
  • All supported lighting functions pass on both sides.
  • No warning lights, flicker, abnormal heat, moisture issue, or loose wiring remains after a short check drive.

Troubleshooting

  • One lamp does not turn on: Recheck the main connector lock, related fuse, and battery connection.
  • One function does not work: Compare the plug area to the product reference images and verify the connector is fully seated.
  • Warning message or flicker: Confirm the correct product variant was installed and that any included decoder, resistor, or relay is connected and secured.
  • Moisture appears: Light condensation right after installation is normal and usually clears within about a week of regular driving as the lamp warms up. If water collects inside or the moisture doesn't clear, contact RIGNOX support.
  • Beam pattern is too high or uneven: Recheck lamp seating first, then adjust aim on a flat surface.

Before you call it done

After the Install

No DRL plug in your harness? Vehicles that never had daytime running lights need the DRL lead wired to a fuse that switches with the key: how to find the right fuse with a test light, and how to tap it safely.

Aim the low beams before you drive at night; a projector an inch too high blinds oncoming traffic: the 25-foot wall method, and where the adjusters are on this housing.

Fast-blinking turn signals or a bulb-out message after the swap is a load issue, not a fault: how to tell hyperflash from flicker, and what to check first.

A thin mist inside the lens after a cold night is normal on any vented lamp: the automaker rule for fog vs a real leak.
