Is This Normal? How LED Headlights and Tail Lights Behave After Install

Sharp cutoff, DRL turning amber during a signal, fog that clears, a leveling dial that does nothing: the behaviors that look like faults but are by design after an LED light swap, and the ones that aren't.

Truck LED headlights and tail lights operating normally at night

New LED lamps don't behave exactly like the halogen or factory LED lamps they replace, and some of the differences look like faults if no one tells you to expect them. This page lists what is by design, so you can tell in a minute whether something needs attention.

If the behavior is on this list, it's by design. If a lamp is dark, keeps going out, or holds water, it isn't, and the guides linked below show you what to do.

The beam

A sharp line with darkness above it. Projector headlights produce a crisp horizontal cutoff: bright road below, dark above. That line is what keeps the light out of oncoming drivers' eyes. If the line sits too high or too low, adjust the aim: how to aim LED projector headlights.

Your dash leveling dial no longer moves the beam (on most models). Every RIGNOX headlight is adjustable, in one of two ways. Most use manual adjustment screws on the back of the housing: you set the aim once at install, and a dash dial, if your vehicle has one, no longer does anything. Some models ship with a leveling motor in each housing instead; if your product page's spec table says "Powered leveling" in the Aim Adjustment row, the dial and your vehicle's auto-leveling keep working as before. A motor only matters on a vehicle that had leveling to begin with. Why some factory features carry over and others don't: which factory features carry over.

Not every projector lights on low beam. On a multi-projector headlight, some projectors are dedicated to high beam and stay dark until you switch to high; the exact split depends on the model. One or two dark projectors on low beam is normal. Every projector dark is not. How projector count works: dual, triple or quad projectors.

Factory features: what the vehicle still does, and what the lamp no longer does

The rule is simple. A feature that lives in the vehicle keeps working; a feature that needed hardware inside the factory lamp works only if the new lamp has that hardware too. The vehicle only sends the headlight power on a few wires (low, high, DRL, turn, and on some vehicles a leveling line); anything the factory lamp did with its own motors, sensors or segment controllers can't be done by a lamp that doesn't have them.

  • Still works: automatic headlights (dusk sensor), Auto High Beam / High Beam Assist (the camera switches the whole high beam on and off), your vehicle's DRL logic, turn signals and hazards, fog and cornering lights in the bumper.
  • Leveling, depends on the model: on RIGNOX headlights with powered leveling (spec table: "Powered leveling"), the dash dial and the vehicle's auto-leveling keep working. On the manual-screw models, aim is set once at install and the dial no longer moves the beam, harmlessly.
  • Gone, and the vehicle may say so: swiveling AFS, and auto-leveling on the manual-screw models. Vehicles that had them may show a leveling or "AFS OFF" warning because the motor they talk to is no longer there. On most AFS vehicles the lamp connector and control module also differ from the standard trim's, which is why we don't list our headlights for factory-AFS trims.
  • Gone, and needs an extra module: matrix / ADB glare-free high beam. The high beam becomes a normal on/off beam, and the vehicle reports its missing segments until an error-canceling module is added. Contact us before ordering if your vehicle had factory matrix or ADB headlights.

Turn signals

Headlight turn signals run in sequence, in amber. Every RIGNOX headlight has an amber sequential turn signal; the segments light in a sweep rather than all at once.

Hazards and turn signals may blink at different speeds. Many vehicles run hazards through a different circuit. Always judge the blink rate with the turn signal stalk, one side at a time. If the stalk blinks fast, see hyperflash: a few vehicles need a load resistor, which we send on request.

The tail light turn signal is red on a few models. Most RIGNOX tail lights signal in amber. Four builds use a red turn signal by design: the red-signal versions for Toyota Tacoma 2005–2015 and GMC Sierra 2007–2014, 2014–2019 and 2019–2026. Check your product page if you're unsure which you have.

The white DRL turns amber while that side is signaling, then goes back to white. That's a switchback DRL doing its job: the white running light steps aside so the amber signal is unmistakable, and returns when you cancel the signal. There can be a moment of dark before the white comes back, because the signal always finishes its off-pulse first. Not every RIGNOX headlight has a switchback DRL; your product page says whether yours does.

Daytime running lights

The DRL dims or turns off when the headlights come on. That's your vehicle's own DRL logic, now driving the RIGNOX light bar instead of the factory one. Whether it dims, turns off or stays on depends on the vehicle, not the lamp.

On some models you choose the DRL color at install. A few headlights ship with both a white and an amber DRL lead in the box; whichever lead you connected at install is the color you get. If you want the other color, it's a wiring choice, not a fault. Your product page notes which models offer this.

Animations and color effects

A welcome animation plays when you unlock the vehicle or power the lights up. On models that have it, the lights run a short startup sequence when the vehicle is unlocked or the lights first get power. There is no separate locking animation. On Happy Lighting kits the startup animation is fixed; on Starlight Running kits you can change it, and the Welcome effect can be switched on or off in the app. Normal driving light takes over as soon as the sequence ends.

RGB and Demon Eye lighting are decorative, and controlled from the app. The white main beam is your driving light; the color elements are styling. Color, brightness and effects are set in the app shown on your product page. If color effects don't respond, it's pairing, not the lamp: RGB Light App Setup.

The color lighting only comes alive with the parking / running lights on. The Bluetooth module that drives RGB and Demon Eye effects is powered through the parking-light circuit. With the parking lights off, the color elements and the app have nothing to connect to; that isn't a fault. Turn the parking lights on, then pair. If only one side or one section responds, the signal cable between the light bars isn't connected.

Smoked tail lights

A smoked tail light looks dark when it's off and bright when it's on. That's the point of the tint. Every RIGNOX smoked lens keeps brake, turn and reverse clearly visible because the LEDs are very bright behind it. Some smoked builds are lighter than others; that's by design, not a defect.

Moisture

A thin fog inside the lens after rain, a car wash, or a cold night. Every lamp is vented and will fog in the right weather. A fine mist that clears within about 48 hours of dry weather is normal; droplets, streaks or standing water are not. The two-minute test: normal fog or a real leak.

Warnings on the dash

A bulb-out message or fast blinking right after install. The vehicle is reading the LED's low current as a failed bulb. Most vehicles are covered by the decoder built into every RIGNOX lamp; a few need a load resistor, which we send free on request. If you replaced headlights and tail lights together, tell us, because the combined circuit may need more load. Details: hyperflash and bulb-out warnings.

A headlight fault on a vehicle that had factory matrix / ADB headlights. Expected without an extra module; the built-in decoder doesn't answer the vehicle's per-segment communication. See which factory features carry over, and contact us for the module your vehicle needs.

Heat and sound

The back of the headlight gets warm. LED driving lights put out real heat, and RIGNOX headlights move it from the LED board into an aluminum base and out through the housing by design. A warm housing after driving is the active aluminum-base cooling doing its job, not a fault. There is no fan inside the lamp, so you shouldn't hear anything from it; a rattle or buzz from the lamp area is a loose part or fastener, not the lamp cooling.

Not on this list?

These are not normal and are worth acting on: a lamp or function that's dark, a lamp that lights and then shuts off, flicker that continues after you've checked the ground, water droplets or standing water, or a cracked lens or housing.

Start with LED headlight or tail light not working. If the checks don't fix it, start a warranty claim with a video of the behavior, photos of the connectors and the label on the back of the lamp, your order number and your vehicle's trim. We reply within two business days, and we'll help you troubleshoot even after the 2-year warranty ends.

The short version

  • Sharp cutoff with dark above it: normal. Adjust aim if it sits wrong.
  • Every RIGNOX headlight is adjustable: most with screws, set once at install, so a dash dial no longer moves the beam; models whose spec table says Powered leveling keep the dial and auto-leveling working. AFS and matrix high beam don't carry over; AFS / ADB vehicles may show a warning.
  • Amber sequential headlight signals: normal. Red tail light signals: normal on four specific builds.
  • DRL dims or turns off with headlights on: your vehicle's logic.
  • Welcome animation on unlock / power-up: normal on models that have it. RGB and Demon Eye: decorative, app-controlled, need the parking lights on.
  • Thin fog that clears in about 48 hours: normal. Droplets or pooled water: not.
  • Fast blink or bulb-out message: needs load; we send a resistor free.
  • Dark, shutting off, still flickering, or holding water: troubleshoot, then start a warranty claim.
